This project is intended to introduce students to the concept of Integrated Design through planning and executing a complex project.
The definition of Integrated Design we employ for this project is:The coherent design of separate elements within a product or service that reflects a unified approach to function, experience, aesthetics, information technology, branding, sustainability, marketing, ergonomics, service and management.
This is an important consideration in the commercial design field where the majority of design work is linked to larger more complex business activities.
Sericulture is a significant element of Chinese Cultural Heritage. Its invention is thought to be between 4,700 - 7,000 years ago and for centuries the process of silk production was kept a closely guarded secret.
The cultivation of silk worms and the processing of silk is important for farming, textile and fashion industries.
As domestic tourism in China becomes more widespread and the promotion of Chinese culture abroad becomes more established, there is an opportunity to showcase this industry in a form that is accessible, educational, entertaining, and enjoyable.
Visitor centres exist in many forms. They are a well established platform for the presentation and commercialisation of cultural phenomena. They may be linked to important buildings, archeological sites, areas of natural beauty etc.
